What is HKInstaYay?
HKInstaYay is a Hong Kong Instagram community. We are known as @hkinstayay on Instagram (IG), and you can track our photos on IG using hashtag #hkinstayay. We do monthly photo walks in Hong Kong. HKInstaYay is founded by Tyson Wheatly (IG @twheat), Peter Lang (IG @furkidsinhk) and Riley Edwards (IG @rig_) in early 2011.
We do monthly photo walks in different parts of town. Anyone is welcome. You don’t need to be an Instagrammer as long as you are into photography or exploring Hong Kong. Local photographers and visiting photographers from overseas are all welcome.
We had eight photo walks in the past. I have been an HKInstaYay member since the very first photo walk back in April 2011 where we went to Cheung Chau (長洲). I started using Instagram in January 2011. You can follow me @wwtang or check out my photo feed here if you don’t have an iPhone/iPad to install the Instagram app.
HKInstaYay is getting some PR lately.
The South China Morning Post – a local Hong Kong English newspaper – interviewed one our of founders Pete Lang who talked about different iPhone camera apps and tips to shoot with a smartphone camera. The article, Great Snaps with these apps, was published on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011. We called iPhone Photography – iPhonegraphy – which then led me to this New York Times article that talks about gearing up tools to turn your smartphone camera into a prosumer level camera. I even challenged my photojournalist friends who are all veterans in the industry to have a showdown after I geared up these tools with my iPhone. I can just picture it where my photog friends with DSLR and telephoto lens whereas I would be holding my mega iPhone with lots of tools sticking out! Can you picture that? 🙂
On the same weekend, several of our members, including myself, fortunate enough to do a pre-taped interview with TVB Jade – a local television network well-known among Chinese communities all over the word – to talk about HKinstaYay. It was a two-part interview. The first part was done by Candy (IG @panglap), Yvonne (IG @my_929) and Marie (IG @marielai). They talked about how we design our photo walk routes, and how we most of us met through Instagram. From total strangers to close friends, many laughs, and tears along the way in these several months in 2011. You can read one of our members’ testimony here from Bonnie YuenHan.
I along with Angus (IG @ming_hui), Ming (IG @ming_hui) and Patrick (IG @partickng) was in the second part of the interview. Ming and Patrick who are pros in the film camera world in Hong Kong and a star in the Lomography community in Hong Kong talked about the why they are still into shooting images with film cameras. Angus and I spoke about why we like shooting pictures with our iPhones and the benefits of it. I said the biggest reward is shooting images with iPhone is the instant sharing with my friends worldwide through various social networks.
The interview was conducted in Cantonese. If you are interested in watching it, please tune in on Saturday, Dec. 10th, 2011 and Dec. 17, 2011, from 9:00am-9:30 am on TVB Jade. The interview will air separately on two Saturdays in a row. The name of the program is 文化新領域. We are trying to put the segments online as well. I will provide English subtitles in the segments so non-Chinese speakers can understand.
After all these talks about HKInstaYay, are you interested in joining us? If so, the ninth photowalk is coming up on Dec. 4th. We are going to Wong Tai Sin（黃大仙). Please sign up here. Deadline to register is Dec. 1, 2011 (11:59 pm HKT).
